Events are stored in three log files: Application, Security, and System.

These logs can be reviewed and archived.

For our purposes we want the System log. Click on "System" in the left-hand column for a list of events.

Look for a date and time when you weren't home and your computer should have been off.



double click on the eg: info n it will show u the detail.

You can also use this log to see how long someone was on the computer. Just look at the time the computer was turned on and off for that day :))

News: Log in to Facebook, Orkut offline

WASHINGTON: You may soon be able to chat with your Facebook and Orkut friends even without an Internet connection, for scientists have developed an application that may make it possible to network, chat, or share files without Internet access.

Researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have come up with an application that may make it possible to chat and even play collaborative games with friends who also have installed the application.

There are two components to the application, dubbed “Peersonalizer,” a Facebook application and a module inside the free, downloadable WiPeer software.

WiPeer makes direct wireless (WiFi) communication between computers possible -- without intermediary devices such as Internet routers -- at distances of up to 900 ft. Peersonalizer uses technology that can also be applied to other social networking sites such as Orkut, MySpace, Friendster and LinkedIn.

Lead researcher Professor Roy Friedman said that the technology could also be eventually used with WiFi-enabled mobile phones, such as the iPhone.

“This application takes social networking to another level,” said Friedman.

“Peersonalizer demonstrates that Internet-based social networks can serve as complementary mechanisms -- rather than replacements -- to social and business life,” he added.

The application has been developed by two Technion Faculty of Computer Science students, Lior Biran and Tomer Einav, under the supervision of Friedman and PhD students Vadim Drabkin and Gabi Kliot.

Acronis True image n Acronis Disk Director...
n ultra iso
n make it a full version i prefer buyin it coz it worth d cost..

then install it..n make a bk up of the system drive ie the drive on which the winxp is installd using acronis true image home

then mk a bootable cd/dvd image using acronis disk director.
PS:select all the sections when it z askd.
ie
Acronis True image home
Disk director full n safe
Drive cleanser..

PS::create the image only do not write d DVD nw..

nw open the ultra iso
in it open the created boot image file v jst made usin disk director..
there ll b folder with some name. on the right hand side..

nw drag n drop the file v bkd up earlier using true image to this area...do not put it in the folder of the compilation..

nw save the whole image..u should see the image file as bootable at the top left corner of ultra iso..


nw write the image usin any dvd burner programs..do not write the dvd as image.
if u r usin nero then th nero express..
n then select image,project,copy in it select the iso file v made usin ultra iso...
burn it..

nw the diff part is over,,,

nw if u need to restore the partition or mk a new installation..jst put this dvd in d drive n reboot the system..

then u'll see options for true image n disk director..
so first take the disk director.
in it format the partition u want to install the win xp..
then commit d changes n then exit
the system ll reboot n then select true image.
in it select restore..
then browse to the bk file which z in the DVD..
its done..it ll tk atmost 9 mins n then it ll be ok..
restart the system..

here the main adv is that..u dont hv to install the applications drivers games etc etc explicitly..it all ll b done in jst abt 10 mins...

yes i wnt to restor another part-->select MBR-->select the hd on which the os is to be installd.

n the restore ll begin..
after itz completed...the pc will reboot tk out the dvd frm the drive..thats it...

SOMPE TIPS...

defragment the drive before bakin up..this increases pc performance..

Early 1990s
Kevin Mitnick, often incorrectly called by many as god of hackers, broke into the computer systems of the world's top technology and telecommunications companies Nokia, Fujitsu, Motorola, and Sun Microsystems. He was arrested by the FBI in 1995, but later released on parole in 2000. He never termed his activity hacking, instead he called it social engineering.

November 2002
Englishman Gary McKinnon was arrested in November 2002 following an accusation that he hacked into more than 90 US military computer systems in the UK. He is currently undergoing trial in a British court for a "fast-track extradition" to the US where he is a wanted man. The next hearing in the case is slated for today.

1995
Russian computer geek Vladimir Levin effected what can easily be called The Italian Job online - he was the first person to hack into a bank to extract money. Early 1995, he hacked into Citibank and robbed $10 million. Interpol arrested him in the UK in 1995, after he had transferred money to his accounts in the US, Finland, Holland, Germany and Israel.

1990
When a Los Angeles area radio station announced a contest that awarded a Porsche 944S2 for the 102nd caller, Kevin Poulsen took control of the entire city's telephone network, ensured he is the 102nd caller, and took away the Porsche beauty. He was arrested later that year and sentenced to three years in prison. He is currently a senior editor at Wired News.

Kevin Poulsen again. A little-known incident when Poulsen, then just a student, hacked into Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet was hacked into. Arpanet was a global network of computers, and Poulsen took advantage of a loophole in its architecture to gain temporary control of the US-wide network.

1996
US hacker Timothy Lloyd planted six lines of malicious software code in the computer network of Omega Engineering which was a prime supplier of components for NASA and the US Navy. The code allowed a "logic bomb" to explode that deleted software running Omega's manufacturing operations. Omega lost $10 million due to the attack.

1988
Twenty-three-year-old Cornell University graduate Robert Morris unleashed the first Internet worm on to the world. Morris released 99 lines of code to the internet as an experiment, but realised that his program infected machines as it went along. Computers crashed across the US and elsewhere. He was arrested and sentenced in 1990.

1999
The Melissa virus was the first of its kind to wreak damage on a global scale. Written by David Smith (then 30), Melissa spread to more than 300 companies across the world completely destroying their computer networks. Damages reported amounted to nearly $400 million. Smith was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.

2000
MafiaBoy, whose real identity has been kept under wraps because he is a minor, hacked into some of the largest sites in the world, including eBay, Amazon and Yahoo between February 6 and Valentine's Day in 2000. He gained access to 75 computers in 52 networks, and ordered a Denial of Service attack on them. He was arrested in 2000.

1993
They called themselves Masters of Deception, targeting US phone systems. The group hacked into the National Security Agency, AT&T, and Bank of America. It created a system that let them bypass long-distance phone call systems, and gain access to the pbx of major carriers.

How to hack/change your Windows XP Boot Screen

This is a very simple trick to do if you have done the same for the logon screen and the start button. There are 2 ways to do this trick that I know about one is doing it manually and the other is using a program called bootxp. I am going to tell you the manual way to do it, but if you want to know the other way just let me know, so I can do an update to the guide. Now once you have downloaded your ntoskrnl.exe file save it a general location so that you will have easy access to it, like my folder.



Once you have ntoskrnl.exe file in an easy access folder, restart your pc into safe mode. Once into safe mode go to the folder where your files are located.



Now that you are there copy the file that you want to change your boot screen too. Once you have copied that file, hit the window key + r or type %windir%\system32 in the run command, so that folder as follows.



Once there paste your new file into the folder and overwrite the existing folder.



Now that you have your new file in the folder restart your pc as you normally would and your new boot screen should appear. You can download this bootscreen here.

How To Change Thumbnail Size And Quality

If any of you out there like to use the thumbnail view, especially for browsing through photos and images, it can become a bit of a drain on your system. It is possible to lower the thumbnail size and quality by editing the following registry keys.

Open the registry and navigate to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft \ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer

Create a new DWORD value called ThumbnailSize, and set the value between 32 and 256.

And/or create another DWORD value called ThumbnailQuality, and set the value between 50 and 100.

Key Details :

News: Children flock to social networks

Almost half of children online use social network sites

More than a quarter of eight to 11-year-olds in the UK have a profile on a social network, research shows.

Most sites, such as Bebo, MySpace and Facebook, set a minimum age of between 13 and 14 to create a profile but none actively enforce the age limit.

Ofcom's survey of 5,000 adults and 3,000 children found 49% of those aged between eight and 17 have a profile.

Ofcom says parents could put their children at risk if they do not keep an eye on what they do online.

Wide usage

The Ofcom report looks into the impact of social networks on people's lives in the UK as part of a wider media literacy campaign and surveyed 5,000 adults and more than 3,000 children.

"Social networks are clearly a very important part of people's lives and are having an impact on how people live their lives," said James Thickett, director of market research at Ofcom.

He added: "Children's lives are very different from what they were 20 years ago. Social networks are a way of creating a social bond."

The Home Office has been working with social networking firms and is expected to publish a set of guidelines for the sites around best practice, security and privacy on Friday.

The report is expected to recommend that profiles created by children are set to private by default, or are only viewable by friends nominated by the user.

It also suggests that social sites maintain a distinct contact page listing contact numbers, such as 999, children can use to get help.

The three leading social networks, MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, all say they remove profiles of users that are found to be too young on their sites.

But at present no technology is used to actively verify the age of users.

The Home Office guidelines are set to encourage social networking sites to investigate age verification technologies and to give better signposting to users about privacy settings, and warnings about the implications of posting personal details.

A spokesman for MySpace said the firm "proactively ensures that profiles of 14 and 15-year-olds are automatically made private so that users are protected from adults they don't already know in the offline world".

The company said in the future all of its users under 18 would have profiles set automatically to private.

Risk perception

More than a fifth of people in the UK aged 16 and over have an online profile, the Ofcom survey showed.

But the report revealed a "significant difference" between the perception of the risks and use of social networks between parents and children.

"While people are aware of the status of their profile there is a general lack of awareness of the issues attached to them around privacy and safety," said Mr Thickett.

He added: "People put aside concerns about privacy and safety believing they have been taken care of by someone else."

Forty-one per cent of children had set their profile so that it was visible to anyone, according to the report.

But 16% of parents admitted they did not know if their child's profile could be seen or not by strangers.

"There is an issue about parenting," said Robin Blake, head of media literacy at Ofcom.

New friends

He added: "Parents who are allowing their children to go online without supervision and support... need to recognise that their children are potentially at risk."

According to the Ofcom report, almost 60% of children use social networking sites to make new friends, compared to 17% of adults who use the sites for the same purpose.

While two-thirds of parents said they set rules for their children when using social networking sites, only 53% of children said that their parents had set such rules.

"Children are using these sites with a far lower awareness of some of the issues and rules that these sites entail," said Mr Thickett.

Ofcom called on social networks to improve the visibility of privacy settings.

"The settings are not obvious to some people when using these sites," said Mr Blake.

He said Ofcom would be "monitoring and reviewing" the guidelines that social networks had drawn up in conjunction with the Home Office.

However, Ofcom admitted it had no legal authority over social networks and was not "regulating them".

Mr Blake said: "Ofcom's approach is very much to encourage industry to do the right thing."

Dr Rachel O'Connell, chief safety officer at Bebo, told BBC News: "We're working with the regulatory bodies. It's critical to our business that we adhere to these guidelines."

The continued search for better search in orkut

orkut may be all about your social connections, but Google is a search company at heart -- so we're always looking for ways to improve our orkut search features. Here are some of the latest improvements:

1. We are now making a greater effort to guess what you are looking for. In the past, you may have noticed that a more general search on orkut didn't always provide you the results you were hoping for. If you searched for a friend named Navneet, you may have found that the first results were for communities called "navneet." We've spent some time working on this and think you'll see better results more often now. So go ahead and try it here.
2. Just as with Google search, we'll now suggest a correction if we think you've misspelled your search words. You can see an example here.
3. We now take into account the country, state and city listed in your profile when searching on orkut, so you'll get the other Navneets from Maharashtra (if that's where you live), even if you have it listed as MH.

To help make these search improvements really effective, remember to keep your profile up to date.
