Worlds Biggest Search Engine Launched

3 Times Bigger Than Google http://www.cuil.com

Former Google search experts have revealed what they hope will be a threat to their previous employer's dominant search service. The new engine is named Cuil, after the Gaelic word for "wisdom." It's perhaps not the catchiest name ever, but neither was Google, before it became a household name. The people at Cuil claim the new search engine uses far fewer servers than the search leader, yet indexes a much larger chunk of the Web. It also purports to produce more relevant search results, because the information it returns in response to queries is based on organization of ideas rather than link popularity. A final—and important—differentiator from Google is that Cuil, according to the company, doesn't collect information on its users' search histories or IP addresses. Of course, that last advantage is significant only if the product is worth using.

The home page, which is mostly a black, open space, is even more minimalist than Google's. There are no menu options for Images, Maps, News, Shopping and so on, but if you're simply looking for Web results, that's not really a problem. Just below the search-text entry box, Cuil touts the number of pages it claims to have indexed—over 121 billion at this point, which cofounder (and former Google index architect) Anna Patterson claims is the most comprehensive index of any search engine and more than three times the size of Google's. The company plans to index the entire Web with its Twiceler crawler. Depending on whose figures you believe, Cuil is less than 20 billion pages away from getting the whole 141 billion shebang under its belt. But a recent Google blog post counters that number, stating that its engineers had noted a total Web page population of over 1 trillion, adding that their index was still the biggest—without actually stating how many pages it contains.
The Cuil site was occasionally unresponsive when I tested it on the first day of its availability. I even had readers tell me they encountered no results for obvious queries, such as large city names. Later in my testing, however, the result pages appeared populated and accurate.

As with Yahoo! (but not Google or Microsoft Live Search), when you start entering a search term, suggestions appear in a drop-down list. This can speed the process, especially if you're not sure how to spell the full phrase. Don't confuse this with the auto-complete feature of browsers, which produces suggestions based on your history in a browser. I have one issue with Cuil's implementation, though: The first suggestion often seemed to be more of a marketing link than a useful suggestion. You can, however, turn off the feature in the Preferences menu.

Another thing I missed when searching in Cuil was spelling correction suggestions: Most modern search sites will suggest fixes for your typos, but Cuil presents results for whatever you type, even if you've misspelled it. When I searched for "south americe" I did get a couple of results on South America, but no indication that I ought to try again

You Want Lots Of Music, Appz, Anything?, Try Dex Hunting

So what's this Dex Hunting, anyway?

See: lots of people post files of any kind on their websites to share them with friends. Those files are "protected" by not mentioning them. There's no visible link given, and for literally hundreds of thousands this seems to be enough.

What they don't know: There are many nice techniques to locate the invisible stuff.

I don't want to get in too deep - and as I'm rather new here it's possible some of the tricks might have been posted elsewhere.

But if you want to find lots of music the way I described it - and want other people doing the "dirty" work I recommend:

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
A free message board - gathering place of the best "dex hunters" in the universe. There you will find loads of *fresh* (!) mp3 links. Not only this - they update with lightspeed. This is a site you won't visit once a month or once a week. I visit them hourly, and I know why.
CODE
http://www.fionasforum.com/Stairway/

Remember: as soon as a fresh dex is posted there, it will be invaded and can die within hours. But I swear there will be enough left for your needs.

Curious?
Wanna try it for yourself?

Try this one. It's a search bot, and instead typing complicated data strings for Dex Hunting just type what you're looking for, and the bot does the rest for you. Sounds nice, huh?

not very sexy at first sight - but very effective.

Hope you'll like it!

Update on recent Orkut maintenance

Many of you may have noticed or heard from friends that orkut experienced some downtime. On Monday July 21st we discovered a bug that affected the profiles of a small set of orkut users. Starting at 14:30 PST, our engineering team disabled access to orkut.com while we worked on this issue. We brought orkut.com back up as soon as the bug was fixed, although we temporarily disabled a small number of profiles while we were restoring them. Less than .1% of all orkut users were impacted.

At no time was any user's login information at risk. Additionally, our team has fixed any impacted accounts automatically. As always, you should not click on any links that you receive in your messages folder, scrapbook, or email as we are already taking care of this bug.

At this time, we have notified all impacted users on their orkut homepage (see example below). If you have not received this notification from our team, then your account was not affected. Your safety and security on orkut is the number one priority for our team, so we wanted to be as transparent with you as possible. It's important that we continue to work with our users to provide a safe community for all to enjoy!

New orkut search filters

You may have noticed that lately it's been easier to find what you're looking for when searching on orkut. For example, when you search for a person, we now show people in your network or country at the top of the results list , and we also suggest other terms if we think you've misspelled something. We're always looking to improve search on okrut, which is why we just launched some new search filters that we hope will further aid your searches. Here's how search filters work:

Say you are trying to find a person you met yesterday, but you can't remember his or her complete name. As always, you can type in what you remember of the person's name and hit search. After that, you can refine your search by applying the filters that appear on the right side of our search page. You might start by restricting the search to the languages you speak or the country you're in. To get even better results, try restricting by gender, age, relationship status, children or sexual preference. The more filters you combine, the more specific results will you get.

If you're searching for a community, you can now refine your results to communities that focus on only one specific category. This may help you find what you're looking for faster.

Making orkut more accessible

Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. We know that for visually impaired users, it can be difficult to navigate through orkut using a mouse to point and click on various links. In order to make orkut more accessible to all users, we recently added accesskeys for some commonly used links on orkut. With accesskeys, you no longer need to click your mouse to visit different pages on orkut. For example, if you are using IE, when you press "alt + s", the focus is moved to the "Scrapbook" link at the top of the page. Pressing "enter" will then take you to your scrapbook page.

Please note that different browsers use different control key combinations for accesskeys. On Netscape Navigator and Mozilla Firefox, "alt + shift + s" should take you directly to your scrapbook (you don't need to press "enter"). Similarly, if you hold down "alt+shift," simply press "h" for home, "p" for profile, "b" for friends, "c" for communities, "l" for logout. Almost all browsers support this feature, so please consult your browser manual to find the right key combination for your browser.

Make Orkut Free From Google Ads

Internet is a vast place for people like us who like to surf from one site to another. Social networking sites are just one more place to surf. These sites such as Orkut, MySpace, Hi5 or FaceBook have penetrated so deep into our lives that the moment we start surfing, we logon to these sites first.

Orkut is one of social networking sites owned by Google. Though it's only popular in Brazil and India, but for some reason, Alexa says Orkut is the 9th most visited site in Ireland.

One thing which I have been annoyed of lately is the Google Ads shown by Google in the community homepage as this one.

But applying my hack you can free yourself from these ads

Hack

First and foremost requirement of this hack is that you should be using Mozilla Firefox. This Open Source piece of software is best software I've ever came across.

Fire your Firefox and proceed to this addon link -> AdBlock Plus . According to their developers

"Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them."

Click "Add to Firefox" and install the addon for your browser. Next step is restart your browser. Now everyone must be thinking how this can be called a hack when it comes to just installing a simple addon. Wait!!!

Whenever you want to block an ad, just right click it and click "AdBlock Image". But clicking all the ads inside Orkut is an impossible task because for that you have to search each and every community. But ever noticed that what is common with all these ads, their command format is

http://www.orkut.co.in/AdsIframe.aspx?xxxxxxx

This page is responsible for generating the Adsense code and placement of ads on pages.

Follow the next step and block all the Google ads. Right click any Google ads and click "Adblock Image". A box will popup and just enter "http://www.orkut.co.in/AdsIframe.aspx"
Bingo !!! You will blocked that ADS Page

Firefox About:Config Tweaks

Here’s a small course on hows to use About:Config, as it will help you in making the adjustments for tweaking your FIREFOX.3.

1. Start Firefox.
2. Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter. When you’re presented with the warning screen click the I’ll be careful, I promise button:

You should see a long list of hidden settings that look meaningless and confusingly complicated

4. Now comes the main part of actually modifying and/or creating new values:

* If it is told that the key already exists then you can type the name of the preference in the Filter box, and it will instantly show only the matching results. Once you find the preference you’re looking for just double-click on it to change the value.

* If it is told you that the key does not exist you will need to create a new value manually. Just right-click on any entry on the about:config screen, go to the New menu, and choose either string, integer, or boolean depending on what the demand is.

5.You may need to restart your browser for some of the options to take effect.

6. Now if you want to go back to the original state. Any of the preferences can be reset to their default values in the
event that something doesn’t work the way you expected it to. This can be done by right-clicking on the particular option in about:config, and selecting Reset. Values that have been changed at one point or another will appear in bold text they have been reset they should no longer be bold.

Session Restore Saving Frequency

Whenever Firefox crashes it will try to restore all of your open tabs to the way they were. This has come in handy several times for me before, but sometimes I notice that it isn’t able to restore all of my tabs for me.

That’s because Firefox, by default, only saves the session restore data every 10 seconds, but you can configure that time interval to whatever you would like.

* Name: browser.sessionstore.interval
* Preference Needs to be Created: No
* Preference Type: Integer
* Default Value: 10000
* Possible values:
o The number of milliseconds between session restore saving. For example, entering in 1000 would cause the session restore data to be saved every 1 second, whereas a value of 20000 would make it happen every 20 seconds.

Increase the Number of Results in the Address Bar

By default the address bar will always show 12 results in the drop-down menu, which is probably more than enough for most people. If you prefer to see more (or fewer) results you can alter how many items can be displayed with the following setting:

* Name: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
* Preference Needs to be Created: No
* Preference Type: Integer
* Default Value: 12
* Possible values:
o The number of results you would like to appear in the address bar drop-down menu.

Enable Advanced Color Profile Support

Those of you that are photo enthusiasts might enjoy the fact that Firefox has advanced color profile capabilities. It’s not enabled by default because it can cause a 10-15% performance hit for the browser, but if image quality is that important to you this might be something you want to enable. Here’s a great comparison between Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 (with the color profile turned on)

* Name: gfx.color_management.enabled
* Preference Needs to be Created: No
* Preference Type: Boolean
* Default Value: False
* Possible values:
o True - Enables color profile support so that the colors appear richer
o False - Disables color profile support so that you have better performance

Get Notified when a Website Redirects You

Some websites redirect users from one address to another, and it often happens so quickly that it can be difficult to catch. This could be a bad thing because the site could try to redirect you to a malicious or inappropriate site, but you can setup Firefox 3 to alert you when things like this happen. To enable this feature open up the Firefox preferences, switch to the Advanced -> General tab, and then check the box labeled Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page. Then whenever a site tries to redirect you from one page to another you should see a warning bar.

Disable Antivirus Scanning

For Windows users when Firefox 3 finishes downloading a file it will initiate a virus scan using any antivirus application that the user has installed on the computer. If you download a lot of files (especially large files) this can become a bottleneck for you as you wait for each file to be scanned, especially when many antivirus applications will automatically scan all incoming files. That means each file you download might get scanned twice.

By jumping into the about:config you can enable or disable this setting at your leisure:

* Name: browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone
* Preference Needs to be Created: No
* Preference Type: Boolean
* Default Value: True
* Possible values:
o True - Scans each download with the installed antivirus application
o False - Does not scan each download with the installed antivirus application.

WORK OLD ADD ONS IN BETA 3

Right-click anywhere. Choose New>Boolean.
Make the name of your new config value
extensions.checkCompatibility and set it to false.

Make another new boolean pair called
extensions.checkUpdateSecurity and set the value to false.
Restart Firefox.
